About

Maurice J. Hermans (1974, Kerkrade) is a Dutch artist whose work transcends traditional boundaries, exploring themes of transition, memory, and the unseen layers of place—whether through visual art, sound, or research. While many of his projects engage directly with urban trauma and the complexities of shrinking cities, his practice is united by a deeper fascination with the margins: the spaces, sounds, and stories that exist just beyond the obvious.

He has published independently as well as for established publishers such as nai010, Lit Verlag, and OECD. In 2010 he was awarded the Special Award Demography Price 2010 for his work on shrinking cities. He was commissioned to curate and edit the final publication of the Internationale Bau Austtellung (IBA) Parkstad.

As the co-founder of the Betawerk Online Agency he has won the Dutch Interactive Award, among other awards. Also, he gave keynotes for iASK Koszeg, OECD, University of Vienna, IFHP, the Dutch consulate in Dusseldorf, Neimed among others. In the past fifteen years he has curated various cultural events.

In 2021, he founded the AUW music collective, performing sessions in AUW an der Kyll (2021), Charleroi (2022) and Konjic (2023).

As of 2023, he serves as the director of Intro in Situ, a workspace for contemporary music and sound art.
